The DPHS – Doctoral Programme in Human Sexuality returns in 2019/2020 in its 2nd edition. The first round of applications is now open and ends on the 1st of March 2019.
Aimed at trained psychologists, educators, doctors, nurses, sexologists and other health and social sciences professionals, the PDSH seeks to promote advanced knowledge and the development of research in a relevant area, central to the well-being and biopsychosocial health. It is one of the first PhD programmes of this kind in Europe and one of the few internationally.
The curricular structure of the PDSH is strongly oriented to the development of high quality scientific research and production skills over six semesters, and it is organised around five thematic areas – sexual education, gender, sexual medicine, sexual and reproductive health and clinical sexology. While promoting high quality advanced training and creating international strategic partnerships, the PDSH aims to establish an international research centre in the area of sexuality at the University of Porto as well as in Portugal.
The creation of this doctoral programme, taught and assessed in both Portuguese and English languages, is intended to fulfill the needs resulting from the scarcity of professional training in the field of human sexuality. The DPHS is a partnership between the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, within the University of Porto.
The doctoral programme also offers access to a laboratorial resource: the SexLab. The Research Group in Human Sexuality was created in the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, in 2012. It is fully dedicated to experimental and psychophysiological research of the different aspects of human sexuality, and it has gained significant public and international media interest.
